Which laser suits glass & crystal awards
For float glass, K9 crystal (surface), a UV laser (355 nm) is the usual choice. A UV laser marks with very little heat. That makes it suitable for plastics, silicone, glass and delicate surfaces that melt, crack or discolour under a CO₂ or fiber beam.
A UV laser is slow for deep engraving and is not the economical choice for large wooden items or deep metal engraving.
When a CO₂ laser makes sense
A CO₂ laser works at a wavelength that organic materials absorb well, including wood, leather, acrylic, paper, cork, fabric and glass. It removes or darkens a thin surface layer to leave a clean engraved mark. For glass & crystal awards, consider it if your range includes materials the uv laser does not handle well, or if you need a different finish.
Setting up the job
CO₂ gives a frosted surface mark but can leave micro-cracks on thick glass, while a UV laser marks glass with less stress. 3D images inside a crystal block need a separate subsurface laser, which is a different machine.
What to check before you buy
- Material match. Confirm every material you plan to sell (float glass, K9 crystal (surface)) with a test mark before deciding on the laser source.
- Marking area. Flat items can be batch-marked on a jig plate. Plan the layout so one run fills the marking field.
- Power. 3 W and 5 W UV sources cover most gift, plastic and glass marking. UV sources cost more per watt, so they suit fine detail rather than deep engraving.
- Software. Check that the software imports vector files and name lists from a spreadsheet, and handles photo engraving if you plan to offer it.
- Fume extraction. Every laser marking job releases smoke or fine particles. Budget for a proper extractor and ventilation from day one.
- Power supply. Use a voltage stabiliser or online UPS. Unstable supply can damage the laser source and controller.
- Safety. Open galvo markers need protective eyewear rated for the laser's wavelength, or an enclosure. Never laser PVC, vinyl or unknown plastics, because some release corrosive and toxic gas.
Running this work in Chennai
Glass awards sell at higher prices than acrylic, so fewer pieces bring in the same revenue.
Chennai's schools, colleges and sports associations run annual days and tournaments through the year, giving trophy makers repeat orders. Chennai's gifting trade runs through retail markets such as T. Nagar and Parry's, the corporate offices along OMR and Guindy that buy gifts in bulk, and the marriage halls across the city that create return gift orders every muhurtham season.
NMB Enterprises is a laser marking machine distributor in Chennai, based at Poonamallee, so buyers in the city can reach the team directly to discuss their product and the machine that suits it.
