UV Laser Marking Machine in Chennai

A UV laser marking machine marks plastics and glass with very little heat, giving fine, clean marks where fiber and CO₂ lasers melt or scorch. This page covers how UV marking works and what to check before buying. NMB Enterprises in Chennai supplies the IndoForeign UV & CO₂ Specialised Markers.

How a UV laser marks a part: a short-wavelength beam changes the surface with very little heat, the part sits at focus height, and an extractor removes fumes.

How UV marking differs from fiber and CO₂

A UV laser marking machine works at 355 nm, about a third of the 1064 nm fiber wavelength. Most UV marking sources produce this by passing an infrared beam through crystals that convert it to the shorter wavelength. Many plastics and glass absorb 355 nm far better than they absorb fiber or CO₂ wavelengths, so less energy is needed to change the surface. That is why UV is often called a cold process: the mark forms with very little heat spreading into the surrounding material.

In practice this gives a fine, high-contrast mark with no melted edge and very little discolouration around the text. The focused spot is also smaller than a fiber spot through a similar lens, so small characters and dense 2D codes stay sharp. The trade-off is lower power. UV sources for marking are commonly in the 3 to 10 W range, so UV is not the tool for deep engraving on metal or for fast marking of large areas.

Materials and parts that suit UV

UV is the usual answer for white and light-coloured plastics that turn yellow or foam under a fiber laser. It also marks glass with fine detail, and it marks silicone and many films and coatings that other lasers handle poorly. It often gives a usable mark on polyethylene and polypropylene, which are difficult for a fiber laser unless the material contains additives.

Typical jobs include housings and disposables for medical equipment, cable jackets, LED bulbs and their covers, and ABS housings for electrical products. Optical work on lenses and opticals also suits UV, as do glassware and perfume bottles. Medical device makers who need US FDA UDI codes on plastic parts often test UV first, because the mark does not roughen the surface.

UV is not a good fit for deep marks on steel or for marking large areas on wood and cartons, where fiber and CO₂ are faster. It can mark metal surfaces, but for steel and aluminium a fiber laser marking machine is usually the better tool. As with every laser, PVC must not be marked, because it releases hydrogen chloride gas.

Bench and line configurations

Most UV markers are bench workstations. The head sits on a column above a worktable with a Z-axis for focus, and many machines are fully enclosed because the 355 nm beam is invisible to the eye. UV sources are more sensitive to heat and dust than fiber sources, and some designs use a small water chiller, so the machine is best placed in a clean area away from grinding and spray painting.

For production lines, a UV head can be mounted over a conveyor for flying marking on cable jackets and plastic components. The conveyor setup is explained on the online laser marking machine page. Laser coders used on packaging lines, including UV versions, are covered on the Markem-Imaje laser coders page.

What to check before you buy

  • Material test. Send samples of the exact grade and colour you will mark. UV results vary more between plastic grades than fiber results vary between steels, so a test on a similar part is not enough.
  • Source power. 3 to 5 W is commonly enough for codes and text on plastics and glass. Higher power shortens cycle time on production lines but does not improve the mark itself.
  • Field and detail. A smaller field gives the finest detail. If the largest mark is small, choose the lens for the mark rather than for the size of the part.
  • Cooling and placement. Ask whether the source is air-cooled or water-cooled, and plan a clean, ventilated spot with stable room temperature.
  • Fume extraction. Plastics and coatings still release fumes during cold marking. A filtered extractor at the lens keeps the optics clean and the air safe for the operator.
  • Laser safety. Prefer an enclosed cabinet with an interlocked door. In an open setup, use a controlled area and eyewear rated for 355 nm.
  • Code reading. For 2D codes on medical or electronic parts, check readability with your customer's own reader on real samples before fixing the settings.

NMB's UV marking option

NMB Enterprises is an authorised distributor of IndoForeign Technologies laser systems. The UV & CO₂ Specialised Markers in that range are NMB's option for non-metal jobs that a fiber laser does not handle well. Send NMB photos of your part and details of the material, and NMB can suggest which source suits it. The full range is on the products page.

When the part is metal, start with the fiber laser marking machine page. For wood and paper-based packaging, the CO₂ laser marking machine page is the better guide, and large-format engraving on acrylic is covered on the laser engraving machine page.

UV laser marking machine in Tamil Nadu

The usual buyers of a UV laser marking machine are plastic moulders, cable makers, medical device makers and electronics assemblers. In Tamil Nadu, the component plants in the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt and around Hosur often need fine, readable codes on plastic switches and connectors. Engineering units in the Ambattur and Guindy industrial estates in Chennai supply many of these plants and face the same marking requirements.

Gift and retail businesses in Chennai also use UV for names and logos on glass and light-coloured plastics, where a fiber mark would look burnt. Buyers anywhere in Tamil Nadu can phone or WhatsApp NMB on 098417 60722 and share photos of the part with details of the material. NMB will then recommend whether a UV laser marking machine is the right choice. NMB is based at Poonamallee, Chennai 600056.
