How a uv laser marks kids' plastic bottles & lunch boxes: the head focuses the beam on the surface, a rotary turns round parts, and an extractor removes fumes.

Which laser suits kids' plastic bottles & lunch boxes

For polypropylene, Tritan, a UV laser (355 nm) is the usual choice. A UV laser marks with very little heat. That makes it suitable for plastics, silicone, glass and delicate surfaces that melt, crack or discolour under a CO₂ or fiber beam.

A UV laser is slow for deep engraving and is not the economical choice for large wooden items or deep metal engraving.

When a Fiber laser makes sense

A fiber laser works at a wavelength that metals absorb well. It marks stainless steel, brass, aluminium, anodised aluminium and coated metals, and many hard plastics, with a permanent mark and no consumables. For kids' plastic bottles & lunch boxes, consider it if your range includes materials the uv laser does not handle well, or if you need a different finish.

Setting up the job

UV marks most plastics with a dark mark and little melting. A fiber laser reacts differently depending on additives in the plastic, so test the exact bottle first.

What to check before you buy

  • Material match. Confirm every material you plan to sell (polypropylene, Tritan) with a test mark before deciding on the laser source.
  • Marking area. Round parts need a rotary attachment. Check the smallest and largest diameters the rotary supports, and whether it can handle tapered parts.
  • Power. 3 W and 5 W UV sources cover most gift, plastic and glass marking. UV sources cost more per watt, so they suit fine detail rather than deep engraving.
  • Software. Check that the software imports vector files and name lists from a spreadsheet, and handles photo engraving if you plan to offer it.
  • Fume extraction. Every laser marking job releases smoke or fine particles. Budget for a proper extractor and ventilation from day one.
  • Power supply. Use a voltage stabiliser or online UPS. Unstable supply can damage the laser source and controller.
  • Safety. Open galvo markers need protective eyewear rated for the laser's wavelength, or an enclosure. Never laser PVC, vinyl or unknown plastics, because some release corrosive and toxic gas.
