Laser Marking on ABS

This page covers laser marking on ABS, one of the most widely moulded plastics in appliances and electrical products. It explains how ABS responds to fiber and UV laser marking machines and why contrast depends on colour and additives, then lists what Tamil Nadu moulders and appliance makers should check before buying.

How a fiber laser marks ABS: the galvo head steers a focused beam across the surface, the part sits in a fixture at the correct focus height, and an extractor removes fumes.

What gets marked on ABS parts

ABS is used for appliance housings, mixer grinder bodies, switch plates, remote controls, instrument cases, automotive interior trims and many electrical enclosures. Marks on these parts include the brand and logo, model number, rating details, control symbols around knobs and buttons, and serial or batch codes for warranty and service. Many parts also carry a material identification mark such as >ABS< to help sorting at end of life.

Because many ABS products face the consumer, the mark has two jobs. It must stay legible through years of handling and cleaning, and it must look neat on a visible surface.

Which laser marking machine suits ABS

ABS responds to a fiber laser better than many plastics. On black and dark-coloured ABS, a fiber laser usually foams the surface into a light grey or near white mark with good contrast, fast enough for production cycles. On white and light ABS the same laser tends to carbonise the surface, giving a brown or dark grey mark. This can be acceptable, but it varies with the pigment and may look uneven over large areas.

A UV laser at 355 nm gives a finer, more even mark on light-coloured ABS because it changes the surface with very little heat, so edges stay sharp and the area around the mark does not discolour. It is the better choice for small symbols and for parts where appearance is critical. Contrast in laser marking on ABS depends heavily on the pigments and any laser-marking additive in the grade, so two white ABS grades from different suppliers can mark quite differently. When contrast is poor, ask the compound supplier for a laser-markable grade before changing machines. A CO₂ laser can engrave ABS, but it tends to melt the edges and gives low contrast on fine marks.

When pad printing is the better choice

For coloured logos or multi-colour graphics on ABS, pad printing or screen printing is still the right method, because a laser can only change the shade of the plastic itself. Many makers combine the two, printing the brand graphics and laser marking the variable data.

Setting up the job

ABS parts are often large, with curved or textured surfaces. Choose a flat or gently curved area for the mark and check that it stays within the focus range across the whole layout. Textured surfaces do mark, but fine text loses sharpness on a coarse texture, so if a mould change is planned, leave a smooth pad in the tool for the mark area.

For laser marking on ABS, set power and speed to colour the surface rather than cut into it; too much energy on ABS gives a raised, bubbly mark or burnt edges. Hold parts in a nest that locates on moulded features, and on high volumes mark straight off the moulding machine with a robot or conveyor feed so the code can include machine and cavity numbers. Extract fumes at the marking head, since marking ABS releases styrene and other compounds.

What to check before you buy

  • Colour and grade. Send moulded samples in every colour and grade you use, because results on ABS vary widely with pigment.
  • Fiber or UV. Compare both lasers on your light-coloured parts before deciding; dark parts usually suit fiber.
  • Additive option. Check with your compound supplier whether a laser-markable ABS grade exists for problem colours.
  • Surface texture. Trial on the actual textured surface, not a smooth sample plaque.
  • Visual standard. Agree on a reference sample for mark colour and finish with your customer or quality team.
  • Cavity data. If you mould in multi-cavity tools, plan to mark cavity numbers automatically.
  • Fume extraction. Plan extraction at the marking head for operator comfort and to keep the lens clean.
  • Large parts. Measure your largest housing and confirm the stand height and field size accommodate it.

Laser marking on ABS in Tamil Nadu

Plastic moulding in Tamil Nadu serves the consumer electronics and appliance plants around Sriperumbudur and Oragadam as well as the auto component base in Chennai and Hosur. Coimbatore's well known wet grinder and kitchen appliance makers also use moulded plastic parts. Moulders in Chennai's Ambattur and Guindy industrial estates supply many of these customers. Laser marking on ABS gives them a way to add model and batch data to housings without ink or labels.
