What gets marked on pens
A company logo is the most common mark on a pen, usually placed along the barrel or on the clip, and corporate orders often add an event name or a tagline. Gift pens carry a personal name, and premium metal pens sometimes carry a different employee name on each piece in a batch. Schools and colleges order pens for annual days and convocations, usually with the institution's name and the year.
Pens are small and the mark area is narrow, typically a strip a few millimetres tall along the barrel, so text height and font choice matter more than on larger gifts. A laser mark is permanent, whereas pad printing can wear off with handling, which is why corporate buyers ask for laser marking on pens in their premium ranges.
Which laser marking machine suits pens
Metal pens need a fiber laser. On anodised aluminium barrels, a standard fiber laser removes the dye to give a bright white or silver mark, and a MOPA laser can give a darker mark. On lacquered or chrome-plated brass pens the laser removes the top coat to show the brass beneath, and on stainless steel pens it gives a dark annealed mark. The metal pens guide covers settings by finish.
Wooden and bamboo pens need a CO₂ laser, which burns a dark brown mark into the grain, as the wooden and bamboo pens guide explains. Plastic promotional pens split by colour. Dark ABS barrels usually mark well with fiber, while white or pastel barrels tend to scorch, and a UV laser gives a clean, fine mark on them with very little heat. Rubberised grips and soft-touch coatings vary a lot between suppliers and should always be tested.
When a CO₂ marker is the better choice
If most of your orders are wooden or bamboo pens, a CO₂ marker is a better first machine than fiber. It engraves wood with a rich dark mark and also handles the paper and leather sleeves pens are often packed in. A fiber laser can be added later if metal pen orders grow.
Setting up the job
For laser marking on pens in volume, lay the pens side by side in a machined jig plate with a groove for each barrel. Within a field of around 100 x 100 mm a jig commonly holds eight to ten pens, and one cycle marks all of them while the operator loads a second jig. Logos along the barrel stay in focus because the curve across a narrow text height is small. Text that wraps around the barrel, or long marks on tapered pens, need a rotary attachment and are marked one pen at a time.
Set the jig so every pen sits with the clip facing the same way, otherwise logos end up on different sides of the barrel. For name lists, import names from a spreadsheet into the marking software so each groove in the jig gets the right name in order. Run a sample of each pen model before the batch, since two pens that look the same from the outside may have different coatings underneath.
What to check before you buy
- Pen samples. Collect every pen model you sell and have each one test-marked before choosing a laser.
- Jig design. Ask for a jig that suits your most common barrel diameter, with a clip stop for orientation.
- Rotary. Needed for wrap-around marks, so check that it grips thin barrels without slipping.
- Variable names. Check that the software imports names from Excel or CSV and assigns them to jig positions.
- White plastic. If many orders are white promotional pens, plan for a UV laser rather than fiber.
- Small text. Check that small text stays legible on your pens, especially thin fonts on anodised barrels.
- Cycle time. Time a full jig of logos from loading to unloading to estimate output for a large order.
- Clip marking. If you mark clips, confirm the jig holds them flat and at the same height as the barrel.
Laser marking on pens in Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, pen marking is mostly handled by corporate gift vendors and gift shops. Chennai's vendors supply companies with branded pens in bulk, and gift and stationery shops in T. Nagar and around Parry's take smaller orders. Schools and colleges across the state order engraved pens for events. Sivakasi's printing houses produce many of the diaries and calendars that are commonly sold alongside pens in corporate kits.
NMB Enterprises at Poonamallee, Chennai supplies IndoForeign laser markers for laser marking on pens, with fiber for metal pens and CO₂ or UV for the rest. Vendors outside Chennai can send photos of their pen models by WhatsApp to 098417 60722 for a machine and jig recommendation. Pens often travel with corporate diaries and pencil boxes and stationery kits, which have their own guides.
