Laser Marking on Wood

Laser marking on wood is almost always done with a CO₂ laser, because wood absorbs the 10.6 µm wavelength well and chars to a clean brown mark. This page compares how different woods behave and when a galvo marker or a flatbed engraver suits the work. Links to detailed guides for individual wooden products sit within each section.

How a CO₂ laser marks wood: the galvo head scans the beam over the surface, the part sits at focus height, and an extractor removes smoke.

What gets marked on wood

Furniture and handicraft makers mark brand logos and product codes, while gift makers add names and messages. Sign makers engrave lettering on boards and plaques. Photo engraving on plaques is common too, and so are QR codes that link to a product page. Because the mark is burnt into the wood rather than printed, it survives handling and can be oiled or lacquered over.

The existing guides cover individual products in detail, including chopping and serving boards, cork and wooden coasters, wooden keychains, wooden and bamboo pens, wooden plaques and shields, family tree wall art, wooden wedding invitations and cricket bats.

Which laser marking machine suits wood

A CO₂ laser is the standard tool for laser marking on wood. A fiber laser at 1064 nm is absorbed poorly by most light coloured woods and gives patchy results, so it is not a sensible main machine for wood work. UV is not normally used on wood.

Species and boards behave differently. Dense hardwoods such as teak, rosewood, sheesham and walnut give crisp, dark marks with fine detail. Softwoods such as pine have bands of soft and hard growth, so the laser burns deeper in the soft bands and a filled area can look stripy. MDF marks to a uniform dark brown and is easy to work, but its resin binder gives off more smoke and odour. Plywood marks well on the face veneer, but the veneer is thin, so deep engraving can cut into the glue line. Bamboo gives strong contrast and holds fine text well, which is why bamboo gift sets are popular. Rubberwood is pale and takes a clear dark mark, and is widely used for toys and kitchen boards such as wooden name puzzles.

The bigger choice is the machine format. A galvo CO₂ marker moves the beam with mirrors over a field often around 100 x 100 mm, which makes it fast for logos and names on small items in volume, such as pens, keychains, coasters and combs. A flatbed CO₂ engraver moves the head on a gantry over a large bed, so it is slower per item but handles full sheets as well as cutting, which suits wall art, signboards, cake toppers and invitations. Many gift shops end up with one of each, and the laser engraving machine page covers the flatbed side.

When a fiber laser belongs alongside the CO₂

Many wooden products carry metal parts, such as brass plates on shields or steel clips on pens. A CO₂ laser will not mark bare metal, so gift makers who handle both often add a fiber laser for the metal parts and keep the CO₂ for the wood.

Setting up the job

Dry, seasoned wood gives the most even results in laser marking on wood, while damp or freshly cut wood marks lighter and less consistently. Air assist at the nozzle and good extraction keep smoke from staining the surface around the mark, and masking tape over the area is a simple fix on pale woods. Engrave along the grain where you can for long text. Decide whether finishing oil or lacquer goes on before or after marking, since each changes the colour of the burn. Never leave a CO₂ laser running unattended on wood, because flare-ups are always possible.

What to check before you buy

  • Galvo or flatbed. Match the format to your products: a galvo marker for many small items, a flatbed engraver for large boards and cutting.
  • Field and bed size. Measure your largest plaque or board and confirm it fits the galvo field or flatbed without splitting the job.
  • Species trial. Test on each wood you buy in quantity, since a dense hardwood and a board such as MDF need quite different settings.
  • Depth needs. Check how fast the machine reaches the engraving depth you want, especially for signboards and plaques.
  • Cutting. If you also want to cut shapes such as cake toppers and invitations, a flatbed CO₂ with enough power is the right choice.
  • Smoke and air assist. Plan an extraction outlet and an air assist supply, because wood smoke builds up quickly in a closed shop.
  • Jigs for repeat items. For small repeat items such as pens and keychains, a simple jig that holds a full tray in place speeds up batch orders.
  • Fire safety. Keep an extinguisher near the machine and train staff never to leave a wood job running unwatched.

Laser marking on wood in Tamil Nadu

Chennai's gift shops and corporate gift suppliers use laser marking on wood for mementos and personalised plaques, and Coimbatore and Madurai have similar gift trades serving weddings and school events. Kanyakumari district grows rubber, and rubberwood is widely used across South India for toys, kitchen boards and furniture. Wedding and festival seasons bring large batches of return gifts, where speed on small items matters most, as the guides on wooden deity frames and wooden combs show.

NMB Enterprises is based at Poonamallee, Chennai. Gift makers, handicraft units and furniture makers anywhere in Tamil Nadu can call or WhatsApp 098417 60722 with photos of their products, the woods they use, the size of their largest item and their monthly order volume, and NMB will suggest whether a galvo CO₂ marker or a flatbed engraver suits the work better.
