What gets marked on uPVC profiles and pipes
uPVC window and door profiles are marked along their length, on a face that is hidden after fabrication, with the profile maker's name, the profile system and code, the production line, date and time, and often a batch number. This lets a fabricator or a homeowner trace a profile back to its production run if colour or dimensional problems appear later. uPVC pipes for plumbing and drainage carry size, pressure class, standard and certification marks, and batch details along the pipe.
Fabricators who assemble windows also want to identify each finished frame with the order number and its position in the building, so that every window reaches the right opening at installation.
Which laser marking machine suits uPVC, and why most plants avoid it
uPVC is unplasticised polyvinyl chloride, and its chlorine content is the problem. When a laser heats the surface it breaks down the polymer and releases chlorine compounds, mainly hydrogen chloride, which forms hydrochloric acid with moisture. This gas is harmful to breathe and corrodes the lens and metal parts of the laser as well as nearby machinery. For this reason a general purpose laser marker of any type should not be used on uPVC in a workshop or fabrication shop.
Some large extrusion plants do run dedicated CO₂ laser coders on PVC profiles and pipes, and PVC does take a visible mark from a CO₂ laser. These installations rely on an enclosed marking area and high-volume fume extraction, with filters changed often and the exhaust routed safely outdoors. That is a specialist setup chosen by the plant with expert advice, not something to add with a standard marker. For nearly every uPVC user, the practical route is to use the methods described below.
When CIJ is the better choice
For uPVC profiles and pipes, CIJ is almost always the better choice: it prints on the moving extrusion at line speed and releases no chlorine fumes. A fiber laser belongs on the metal reinforcement and hardware, not on the uPVC.
Setting up the job with methods that work on uPVC
On the extrusion line, continuous inkjet (CIJ) is the standard alternative to laser marking on uPVC profiles and pipes. The print head sits after the cooling and haul-off section, and an encoder keeps the print pitch steady as line speed changes. The ink is chosen to adhere to uPVC and contrast with white or laminated profile colours. NMB deals with Markem-Imaje CIJ printers for this work.
In window fabrication, the frame identity is best carried on a label. Labels can be printed and applied by hand or by a print and apply labeller, and PVC-free laser-markable label stock can be marked on a fiber or UV laser away from any uPVC, then applied to the frame. The metal parts of a window are fully laser markable: galvanised steel reinforcement, aluminium sections, hinges and handles can carry an order number or QR code from a fiber laser marking machine, which gives a permanent identity inside the frame.
What to check before you buy
- Confirm the material. Check whether each part is uPVC, a PVC-free plastic or metal; only non-PVC parts should go under a laser.
- Line speed and pitch. For CIJ on profile or pipe lines, give your maximum line speed and the length of the text.
- Ink adhesion. Trial ink on each profile colour and on any protective film, and test rub resistance.
- Label material. If you laser mark labels, choose a stock with no PVC content and confirm it from the supplier's data sheet.
- Hardware marking. Decide which metal part carries the permanent ID and trial a fiber laser on it.
- Extraction near PVC. If a laser works anywhere near uPVC, extract at the head and keep PVC offcuts out of the marking area.
- Specialist advice. If you still want to laser code PVC on line, involve the coder maker and an extraction specialist before any trial.
Laser marking on uPVC in Tamil Nadu
uPVC windows and doors are now widely fitted in homes and offices in Chennai, Coimbatore and other Tamil Nadu cities, and many fabricators assemble frames from extruded profiles. PVC and uPVC pipe extruders also supply the state's farm and building markets. For these businesses, laser marking on uPVC itself is not the route. The methods that work are CIJ on the extrusion line and labels on finished frames, with fiber laser marking kept for the metal hardware.
NMB Enterprises in Poonamallee, Chennai, deals with Markem-Imaje coding systems and is an authorised distributor of IndoForeign Technologies fiber laser systems. Call or WhatsApp 098417 60722 with your profile or frame details to discuss which method fits your line or workshop.
