Laser Marking on Window Motors

Laser marking on window motors is mostly small-format work on glass-filled plastic gear housings, where a left or right hand code matters as much as the serial. This page covers how the resin decides the laser and how to stop wrong-side marks at the station.

How a UV laser marks window motors: a short-wavelength beam changes the surface with very little heat, the part sits at focus height, and an extractor removes fumes.

What gets marked on window motors

A power window motor is a compact DC motor driving a worm gear inside a plastic gear housing, often with the connector and a small control module built in. It bolts to the window regulator inside the door. The marks are small: part number, a left-hand or right-hand identifier, date code and a 2D Data Matrix code (DMC), usually fitted into a few square centimetres on the gear housing.

The LH or RH identifier carries more weight here than on most parts. Left and right door motors are mirror versions that look much alike in a bin, and a wrong-side motor is usually found only at door assembly, which is slow to rework.

Once the door trim goes on, nobody sees the motor again until a service replacement. The mark has to stay readable inside a door cavity that gets damp for the life of the vehicle. Regulator rails and cable drums carry their own part numbers, normally on the steel rail.

Which laser marking machine suits window motors

Most of the visible surface is glass-filled plastic, so for laser marking on window motors the resin decides the laser. Many black nylon and PBT grades mark well with a fiber laser and give a light grey mark. For grades that foam or give low contrast, and for DMC codes with very small cells, a UV laser at 355 nm gives a finer, cooler mark with sharper edges.

Code size is the real limit. A small DMC needs a fine spot, which means a shorter focal length lens with a smaller marking field. That trade suits window motors well, because the mark area is small anyway.

The motor can and the regulator rail are steel and take a fiber mark easily. Zinc-plated rails should be marked lightly, and the result checked in your corrosion test, since laser ablation removes some plating at the mark.

When dot pin marking is the better choice

For regulator rails stamped from steel strip and plated afterwards, a dot pin mark made before plating usually stays readable and leaves the plating unbroken over the mark. A laser is still the better tool for the plastic motor housing.

Setting up the job

Because LH and RH motors look alike, the most useful thing the marking station can do is stop a wrong-side mark. Use separate nests for LH and RH housings, or a sensor that confirms which variant is loaded, so the software selects the matching job without operator choice.

Gear housings have ribs and the connector shroud close to the mark area. Place the mark on the flattest moulded face, away from weld lines and ejector pin marks, where the plastic surface is uneven and contrast drops.

Mark after the motor passes its end-of-line test for current and speed, then read back the DMC before packing. Moulded housings change slightly with resin lot and mould temperature, so recheck contrast and the ISO/IEC 29158 grade when a new resin lot comes in.

What to check before you buy

  • Resin trials. Send moulded housings, not raw granules, for trials on fiber and UV, since glass content and colour change the result.
  • Smallest code. Confirm the cell size of the smallest DMC you need and test that a fixed reader on your line can read it.
  • LH and RH control. Ask how the software links the loaded variant to the job, through separate nests or a sensor.
  • Lens choice. A short focal length lens gives finer detail on small housings. Check the field still covers the full mark.
  • Mark position. Agree a flat face on the housing with the moulding toolroom so future tool changes do not move ribs into the mark area.
  • Regulator rails. If you also mark steel rails, check the same machine can switch jobs quickly between plastic and steel parts.
  • Fume extraction. Plastic marking releases fumes. Plan extraction at the head, especially for UV work at high volume.

Laser marking on window motors in Tamil Nadu

Door system parts, including window motors and regulators, are supplied to the car plants in the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt and to vehicle makers around Hosur. Chennai's industrial estates, such as Ambattur and Guindy, have plastic moulding units serving the auto component trade.

NMB Enterprises is based at Poonamallee in Chennai. Door system suppliers in Tamil Nadu can call or WhatsApp 098417 60722 with photos of the gear housing and the resin grade, and get a recommendation on fiber or UV for laser marking on window motors.
